Young Musician

Internationally, Alvin is winner of solo prizes including Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition (Brussels), Illinois MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition (USA) and Evanston Music Club and North Shore Musicians Club Competition (USA). He is also one of the very few Hongkongers who has qualified to the prestigious Adolphe Sax Competition held quadrennially in Dinant, Belgium. This year, he got selected and invited to give a solo recital at the World Saxophone Congress in Gran Canaria, Spain.

Having performed in Asia’s major venues including the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tokyo Opera City, Taipei National Concert Hall, Beijing National Centre for Performing Arts, etc, Alvin has a diverse profile of performance experience in solo, ensemble, orchestra; traditional, contemporary and commercial.

In Hong Kong where he is native to, Alvin is an active and demanded saxophone player who organises and participates in public events during his stay every Summer. Recently it included a themed solo recital, solo engagements with the Hong Kong Youth Saxophone Choir, and saxophone orchestra concerts. In 2019 before the pandemic, he was invited to the “Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Pre-competition Workshop”, providing demonstration and tips to high school competitors.

Alvin was part of the saxophone quartet “Conflux” during his study in USA. With equal dedication to collaboration with composers and competition, they were finalists in the MTNA National Chamber Music Competition 2022, North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition 2022, and semifinalists in the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition 2022.

Alvin’s ensemble experience started in even earlier years of undergraduate saxophone study. In 2018 he was selected through audition to join the Asian Youth Orchestra, which granted him a fully sponsored performance tour to give 16 concerts in 11 Asian cities as an orchestral tenor saxophonist. In HK, Alvin was also briefly a member of Hong Kong Youth Saxophone Choir, to this day he still occasionally returns as a guest to perform as a soloist or to give workshops to current members sharing his insights and knowledge.

Aside from saxophone performance, Alvin is an arranger/composer. His string quartet Alien Fantasie was selected as a finalist work in the New Generation 2019 competition and was premiered and broadcasted on RTHK4, the local music radio. In 2018 he received commission from the city of Ayase from Japan to produce an orchestral arrangement of the city’s song for its 40th anniversary.

Alvin completed his Bachelor’s study at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then got accepted with scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree at Northwestern University, in one of the most famous and historical saxophone programmes in America. Recently he has finished his additional study in Belgium’s Royal Conservatory Antwerp. Alvin’s teachers include Pieter Pellens, Taimur Sullivan and Tak Chiu Wong.

有幸踏足在三大洲的年青音樂家

在國際舞台上，黃承恩贏得了不少獎項，包括比利時 Grand Prize Virtuoso 國際音樂比賽，美國伊利諾州 MTNA Young Artist 木管比賽以及美國 Evanston Music Club and North Shore Musicians Club 比賽。他在2023年獲得資格參與四年一度，世界最大型色士風比賽 Adolphe Sax International Competition，為相隔九年後唯一的香港人。 同年12月，他亦獲選到西班牙大加那利島世界色士風論壇進行獨奏演出。

黃承恩在演奏上的涉獵甚廣，由獨奏到重奏、樂團；由傳統到當代、流行，他都有接觸。黃氏的演奏足跡亦遍佈亞洲主要音樂場地，包括香港文化中心、東京歌劇城、台北國家音樂廳、北京國家大劇院等。

每逢暑期在香港，黃氏都活躍於籌劃及參與大大小小的音樂活動。最近包括個人獨奏會、在樂團擔當獨奏嘉賓、以及大型色士風樂團音樂會。在2019年，他曾獲邀到 ”香港校際音樂節賽前工作坊“ 作演奏，為參賽者提供指導及示範。

在美國讀書時，黃氏為四重奏 ”Conflux” 其中一員，他們致力準備比賽及與作曲家密切合作。他們在 MTNA National 室樂比賽及 North American Saxophone Alliance 四重奏比賽打入決賽, 以及在美國最大型的 Fischoff National 室樂比賽打入六強.

在2018年，黃氏通過遴選獲選參與亞洲青年管弦樂團，獲全額資助隨團到11個城市巡迴作16場演出。在香港，他曾經是香港青年色士風樂團的成員，他至今仍然會不時以嘉賓身分參與樂團活動，作演奏或與現時成員分享經驗和知識。

除了演奏，黃氏也是作曲/編曲家。他的弦樂四重奏《外星幻想曲》在2019獲選入比賽 “音樂新一代” 的決賽，在香港電台進行首演及播放。在2018年，他獲日本綾瀨市委約，為該市的《綾瀨市民之歌》編製樂團版本，慶祝創立40週年。

黃氏在香港中文大學音樂系畢業，其後他獲美國著名大學西北大學錄取修讀碩士課程。最近他在比利時皇家安特衛普音樂學院修畢演奏家文憑。黃氏的老師包括 Pieter Pellens, Taimur Sullivan 及黃德釗博士。
